Water, water everywhere - much of it going to waste

Why use cleaners that conserve water?

Even though 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water, a majority of it is salt water Only 3% of water on the Earth is fresh water Fresh water, and 75% this is frozen in glaciers. Water scarcity is but one side of the problem; water quality testing has indicated that most new available water supplies are contaminated with industrial waste, sewage or salt. Due to environmental problems “the earth is covered mainly by water, but only a small fraction is available for consumption" (source: http://www.nps.gov)

Why is Water Our Most Valuable Resource?

• Without water, there is no life.

• The human body is at least 2/3 water.

• Humans need to take in about 2 liters of water a day to be healthy.

• We can live without food for at least a month, but less than a week without water.

• We use water for many things besides drinking. Bathing, cooking, growing food, washing clothes, industry, mining, power generation, transportation and recreation all use water.

• Water shapes our landscape through erosion, sediment transport and freezing and thawing. It can level mountains, build deltas and dunes and carve valleys.

• Water covers 3/4 of the surface of the earth. It is underground and in the earth’s atmosphere.

• Do you think we have an abundant supply?

Do you think we have an abundant supply?

All the Water in the World - Less than 1/2% of the Earth’s water is usable by humans. “All the water in the world.” Salt water makes up 97.5% and fresh water 2.50%.

97.5% of the Earth’s water is salt water. Many plants and animals thrive in the salt water, and provide a rich abundance of food for life on Earth. The ocean’s plants provide at least 50% of all oxygen on the planet. Even though humans cannot drink salt water, our oceans supply us with a significant amount of food as well as much of the oxygen we breath.
